Lewis Kaplan is the chairman of the SA Foundation for Progressive Judaism (SAFPJ) and in this capacity sits on the executive committee of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism. Lewis is the Associate Director and Head of Department of the Department of Entrepreneurial Studies and Management at the Durban University of Technology. He is a former president of the Durban Progressive Jewish Congregation and is currently the treasurer of the congregation. He is a former Vice chairman of the Kwazulu-Natal Zionist Council and is an active contributor to many communal programmes.
Lewis is an avid canoeist and cyclist. He is married to Durban lawyer Fiona Gibbons Kaplan and has two children.
