SAUPJ tribute to Simon Jocum

The South African Union for Progressive Judaism and the South African Association of Progressive Rabbis notes with sorrow the passing of Simon Jocum. A distinguished leader who dedicated most of his life to the Progressive Movement and Temple Israel Cape Town.

Simon was educated at Muizenberg High School, and is the Retired Managing Director of Peerless Shirt Manufacturers. He was a member and former President of the National Clothing Federation of South Africa, former Chairman of the Cape Clothing Manufacturers’ Association, and former Chairman of the Clothing Industry Training Board of South Africa.

Simon was very involved in the Community and held the following positions: Honorary Life Vice-President at the Cape Board, Chairman of the Cape Board from 1987-1989; 1993- 1995; former National Vice-Chairman of the National Board; member of the National Executive of the Board of Deputies; member of the National Board’s International Affairs Committee; Chairman’s Committee, IUA-UCF-Welfare; President and former Chairman of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism; member of the Board of Governors of the World Union for Progressive Judaism: former President, Trustee and Elder of Temple Israel Cape Town: Founder/Trustee of the Rabbi David and Bertha Sherman Foundation.

Simon was very passionate about the work he did and was totally committed to serving the progressive community. We bumped into him many times at overseas conferences where he served on the International Assembly of the World Union, and his input was always valued. He gave of his time freely and willingly and was always available to give advice. He will be truly missed by us all.

May his memory be for blessing.
